Signs Your Beagle Might Have Separation Anxiety
Or Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO)
Recognising these signs early can
prevent situations from escalating
If you notice any of the below behaviours,
it’s time to take steps toward managing their anxiety
Pacing or Restlessness
Some beagles may start to pace around the house or seem unsettled before you even leave, sensing that you're about to go.
Excessive Clinginess
Your beagle may follow you from room to room, refusing to settle unless they're right by your side. While it’s easy to brush this off as normal behaviour, it can be a sign of anxiety.
Vocalising (Whining, Barking, or Howling)
Even a normally quiet beagle may start to whine or bark excessively as you’re preparing to leave or shortly after you’ve gone. It might not be loud enough for you to notice initially, but neighbours often will!
Increased Licking or Chewing
Repetitive behaviours like licking their paws or chewing objects (or even themselves) more than usual could signal stress from being alone.
Destructive Behaviour
Chewing on furniture, door frames, or shoes—especially near exits—can be a sign of your beagle’s rising anxiety, as they attempt to escape or cope with your absence.
Eliminating Indoors
Even house-trained beagles may start having accidents indoors, particularly near doors, when left alone.
Refusing Food or Treats
If your beagle suddenly shows no interest in food or treats when you’re about to leave, this can be a sign that their anxiety is growing. Many dogs refuse to eat when they’re stressed.
Panting and Drooling
Excessive panting or drooling in an otherwise relaxed dog can be a physical manifestation of anxiety.
Trying to Escape
This is one of the most dangerous signs of separation anxiety. Some beagles will attempt to dig through doors or windows, scratch their way out of crates, or even jump through windows in a frantic attempt to reach their owners.
In one extreme case, a beagle jumped from a first-floor window, breaking a leg, all because they couldn’t bear to be left behind.
