Kellie really understands the unique beagle behavior and her methods work!

Beagles can be a challenge, but Kellie’s positive reinforcement techniques that utilize the beagle motivation and psyche really work.

I have been an experienced beagle mom for over 25 years and yet I still learn valuable training tricks from Kellie.

Definitely the best trainer for beagles that I have experienced.

"I have (completed a) zoom talk on reactivity on lead … really, really useful. We’ve already had success...Kellie has enlightened me about the gorgeous breed of the beagle and I grew up with them & now have number 3 of my own (which has been very testing!!). Kellie has explained so much, which has really helped in my approach to training. Will definitely do more & would highly recommend."

Embarrassment, Frustration, Anger and Anxiety...

...are all terms previous beaglers have used to describe their beagles' leash reactivity.

  • Your emotions, beliefs and expectations can significantly influence your beagle's behaviour.  You'll discover that it's perfectly fine for your beagle to be vocal: after all, they were bred to be this way. However, you'll learn to teach them to moderate their volume, dialing it down a notch or two.

  • Worrying about what others, including friends and family, think can be exhausting, especially when you have a hunter, not a breed of dog that was specifically bred to listen to humans and follow commands as most other dogs do.

  • You have been conditioned to expect that dogs should behave in a certain way and obey commands, but the reality is beagles will never fit that mold.  They were bred for cooperation, not dominance.

Only Positive Training Is Used To Train Your Beagle...

Beagles respond best to positive-reward based training, making aversive methods ineffective and counterproductive...

No Prong Collars

Many dog trainers resort to using prong collars on beagles that appear aggressive on a leash, when in reality, these beagles are often just anxious or scared.

No Electric Collars

Many dog trainers resort to using an electric collar on excitable beagles on a leash, but that's akin to punishing a child for being excited about ice cream!

No Spray Bottles

Spray bottles are intended to shock or scare your beagle into compliance.  However, in most cases, they may only make your beagle become wary of you, as they see the bottles as an extension of you.

No Shouting Or Jerking Leads

Shouting doesn't work! It can actually exacerbate their behaviour, as they think you're joining in with their excitement.  Moreover, your stress and anger can increase your beagle's stress and anxiety.

How To Stop Your Beagle Pulling On a Leash!

Plus Learn Why Different Walks Have Different Time Limits & Frequencies

(Conquer This First & Then Work On Leash Reactivity)

  • Beagles were never meant to be on leashes, and they find they incredibly restrictive.

  • They were bred to be quick and follow their impulses, yet now we’re asking them to curb those natural instincts.

  • Empathy and understanding will lead to better, calmer walks for both you and your beagle.

  • Beagles need to be introduced to the leash within the first few months of life. I’ll teach you how to start this process before you even take them on their first walk.

  • Beagles rely on their noses more than any other breed. They need to be introduced to scent work gradually, or it can overstimulate their brain.

  • If your beagle isn’t used to a leash or mental stimulation on walks, I’ll teach you how to start their training by going back to the basics.

  • Beagles under 18 months, especially during adolescence, have little to no focus or impulse control, which often leads to leash pulling.

  • Using non-aversive training equipment to help them slow down on walks can be beneficial, but you’ll notice the biggest improvement once they reach adulthood.

  • I’ll introduce you to training equipment that will help you get through this period and also train your young beagle effectively.

  • Traditional heel work isn’t suitable for a beagle. I’ll show you how to use heel work when necessary, but it shouldn’t dictate your entire walk.

  • You’ll learn why allowing your beagle the freedom to walk out in front of you, as they are bred to do, will improve your walks when it’s safe to do so.

  • I’ll walk you through how to use long lines and retractable leashes safely. It’s not the leash itself that’s dangerous; it’s how the leash is used that can pose risks.

How To Work On Your Beagle's Leash Reactivity

Excitable, Frustration, Or Aggressive-Looking

  • Excitability is simply a learned behaviour, and we’ll work on understanding how it developed and how to reverse it.

  • Aggressive-looking behaviour is often rooted in anxiety or fear. You’ll learn to understand why your beagle is anxious and how you can help them relax on a walk.

  • Unsure who or what your beagle will react to? Learn to spot the subtle signs that give you a heads-up.

  • Learn to recognise appeasement body language so you can accurately determine whether it’s excitability or anxiety.

  • It's true—our beagles can sense if we're anxious, and working on our own feelings can help them stay calm.

  • By letting a beagle watch from a space where they feel safe, they can take the time to understand that they can adjust their behaviour.

  • Often, they’re just reacting automatically, even when the situation doesn’t warrant that response. You’ll learn how to help them take the time to observe and respond more appropriately.

Focus & Redirection are two different things

  • By redirecting our beagles to focus on what they do best—scent work—we can distract them and reduce their need to react.

  • Excitable beagles need something even more exciting to focus on. Once we find that, we’ve struck gold.

  • Focus can be challenging for a beagle until they’re much older, so we use distraction techniques in the meantime.
