They Are Stubborn & Willful

You’re going to hear these two words a lot from some fellow beaglers, members of the public, and other dog trainers. Beagles don’t respond to the traditional obedience training model like other breeds, because they aren't genetically wired to be obedient.

You Aren't Being Dominant Enough

People you know, or some dog trainers will tell you you're not being dominant enough. I heard this with my first beagle, Daisy. Some trainers will say beagles are un-trainable unless you use an e-collar. We need to work with a beagle, not try to be its master!

Your Beagle Needs Lots Of Exercise & Mental Stimulation

This is possibly one of the most damaging statements that many dog trainers, vets, and the internet tell you. The truth is, beagles cannot hunt or perform the intense cardio and scent work we think they should be doing every day.

Beagles require constant supervision; otherwise, they will chew on inappropriate items.

Just like babies need cots, Beagles under 18 months old need a crate. This teaches them to sleep for long stretches and provides a safe space for them.
Crying, whimpering, and crate biting aren't necessarily reasons to stop using a crate. Beagles need to be trained differently from other breeds.
Puppy pens are a great tool for when you can’t keep an eye on your Beagle. Additionally, we use a pen to help with nipping training.
Puppy pads can confuse your Beagle during toilet training. You’ll learn to ditch the pads and follow the steps, seeing improvement within 24-48 hours.
